NAME: Xiao Xingchen
CANON: Mo Dao Zu Shi
CANON POINT: Chapter 40, in A-Qing's memories, before Song Lan finds him
AGE: 20
BACKGROUND:
Xiao Xingchen was a disciple of the immortal cultivator known as Baoshen Sanren, who lived on a mountain full of spiritual energy. Everyone who called Baoshen Sanren their teacher would have to swear to never leave the mountain or join human society, or else they would never be allowed to return. When Xiao Xingchen was seventeen, he left Baoshen Sanren's tutelage and went down the mountain, with the intention to save the world. He became famous overnight in a display of his great skill in a night hunt (where cultivators hunt down monsters and the undead) and he wanted to create his own sect, with the focus on common ideals as opposed to blood ties.
When a smaller cultivation sect known as Yueyang Chang is nearly wiped out, Xiao Xingchen takes the matter into his own hands and investigates the cause, eventually finding that the culprit is a man named Xue Yang. When he takes Xue Yang to be punished for his crimes, he finds that the politics of the world are more complicated than he could have expected when the powerful Jin sect protects him for untoward reasons. This results in the Yueyang Chang sect leader Chang Ping being harassed into retracting his grievances and Xue Yang being set free. In order to get back at Xiao Xingchen, Xue Yang attacks the sect of his closest friend Song Lan and blinds him. Believing all of this to be the fallout of his actions, Xiao Xingchen asks Baoshen Sanren to heal him and even gives up his own eyes for Song Lan, then disappears from public view.
When wandering the world and reaching a town far away from where most cultivators would travel, he eventually befriends a young girl known as A-Qing who, unbeknownst to him, is only pretending to be blind. They also find a severely injured man who, unbeknownst to either of them, is Xue Yang. He supports the trio with night hunts, turning in defeated prey for money. He doesn't give his name, only letting them call him by his title of Daozhang. The trio live together peacefully in a coffin house, but he doesn't realize that Xue Yang has fooled him into killing innocent people by making these people appear to be undead during Xiao Xingchen's night hunts.
PERSONALITY:
Xiao Xingchen is described by the people who know him as “the bright moon and gentle breeze” with his kind demeanor, contrasting with his friend Song Lan, known as “distant snow and bitter frost”. Because of his upbringing apart from society, he may appear sheltered, not having experienced much of the world outside of cultivation. This gives him an utter lack of street smarts and other common life skills, showing in ways like him being too embarrassed to haggle prices at a street market or not knowing how to repair parts of a house. It even makes it difficult for him to even make up stories, only knowing how to tell historical events. Kind and generous, he buys candy for his housemates every day when he knows how much they love sweets but can’t afford it on their own. He laughs easily at anything slightly amusing, even after all of the pain he’s experienced.
However soft he might seem, he is a proactive heroic type through and through. He cares deeply for people, starting from him leaving his mountain with the goal to save the world. Though he carries himself in a refined manner as befitting a cultivator, he doesn’t put on any airs or seek to reap any rewards from heroism, dressing in simple clothing and he helps anyone who asks for his help, not letting the fame from his acts get to his head. He never loses his temper and he conducts himself properly, even when he's faced with someone he distrusts. Despite the cultivation world’s emphasis on blood ties, he had the ambitious goal to create a sect with his close friend that's more focused on common ideals, which are more important to him than blood family.
He is also very haunted by his past, even if he tries to not let it show. The incident with the Yueyang Chang clan disillusions him and he dares not to try to get involved in other complicated sect matters again, abandoning his name and disappearing from the cultivation world in shame. Even if he was not at fault, he still believes that his actions have led to innocent people being killed and his friend being hurt, as the kind to take more of the blame upon himself. Still, he always does what good he can for others, even if on a smaller scale now. He gives up his eyes to his friend Song Lan, out of a mixture of being self-sacrificing as well as out of guilt for having been the reason why Xue Yang attacked him. Traveling on his own with no destination, he helps who he comes across and goes on night hunts to vanquish dangerous creatures alone, trying to put the past behind him as continues with his life.
Without his eyes, he still can rely on himself with his powerful abilities and heightened senses from being a cultivator, so he lives on his own for a while in his self-imposed exile. At first, he turns away the first person who wants to join him. He isn’t even visibly bitter when harassed, turned away, or taken advantage of when people notice his blindness. Even when A-Qing steals his wallet, he calmly asks her to return it, but even lets her have it when he figures she needs it more than him. He often doesn't outright ask for help, only accepting when it's offered and if he knows he doesn't know how to do it on his own, such as with the aforementioned shopping for vegetables (since he doesn't know how to pick them out and the vendors give him their worst goods).
Despite the harsh disillusionment he experienced, he still has a powerful streak in naivety in him. Though of course not completely unaware of humanity’s ability to deceive and other evil acts, he’s very trusting in the good in others, without a trace of suspicion in him if he likes the other person. His first companion, A-Qing, pretends to be blind for all the time they know each other, and he only realizes the truth when she admits to the lie. Having been surrounded by stuffy, serious cultivators all his life, he’s easily won over by people with charming words, which makes it easy for the injured Xue Yang to deceive him and win over his favor. He doesn’t even ask for the name of the injured man he helped, out of respect to whatever reason he might have for hiding it, since he’s hiding his own identity as well.
